Susan Bassett is a singer/songwriter/musician with 20 years experience as an early childhood educator.
Using her various skills, she developed movement and music workshops for providers, parents and teachers or
anyone who wants to be an active participant in the musical development of very young children.
It is generally believed that all children have natural musical aptitude and are capable of achieving basic music competence.
Being able to sing in tune and keep accurate rhythm are skills learned from the modeling and active participation of the adults
in their lives. This participation is essential to the musical growth of children regardless of the adults' musical ability.
In this lively, participatory workshop, we use a variety of techniques - finger plays,
small and large movement, dance, instrument and rhythm play - to teach basic music skills.
We explore how to create a developmentally appropriate environment of rich
and varied music experiences. We also focus on the benefits of music in children's
lives and explore how music helps build community, expresses emotion, supports
pre-reading, pre-math and spatial relationship skills.
Workshop participants have said:
- "Above and beyond the expectations I had coming in."
- "Wonderful, enjoyable workshop."
- " I got some good ideas for activities with the kids in my program."
- "It was great and I will definitely use more music during my day!"
Besides having many years of working directly with children in various classroom
settings, Susan also completed the Music Together workshops entitled "Introducing
Music Together: How Children Grow Musically and How You Can Help" and
"Teaching Music Together: Understanding and Enhancing the Young Child's
Music Development", in May 2005. She then completed an internship with Music
Together for Valley Families in July 2005.
